South Lanarkshire »  South Lanarkshire

South Lanarkshire is one of 32 unitary council areas of Scotland, covering the southern part of the former county of Lanarkshire. It borders with the south-east of the city of Glasgow and contains many of Glasgow's suburbs, commuter towns and smaller villages. Here is quite developed the rural tourism. It is not so known as the continental Europe sites of rural Slovakia or other major popular centers of that type of tourism.

The main town of South Lanarkshire is Hamilton, located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland. It serves as the main administrative centre of the South Lanarkshire council area and is the fifth largest town in Scotland after Paisley, East Kilbride, Livingston and Cumbernauld. Hamilton is located 19 km south-east of Glasgow and 56 km south-west of Edinburgh. There is the River Clyde that passes near the town.

The town of Hamilton was originally known as Cadzow, but was re-named in honor of James Hamilton its first Lord. The Hamilton family constructed many historical buildings that become the cultural heritage of the town. The main attraction here is the Hamilton Mausoleum in Strathclyde Park, which has the longest echo of any building in the world. In South Lanarkshire there is also located the World Heritage Site at New Lanark and the explorer David Livingstone's birthplace in Blantyre. This council area is also a home for the museums of Biggar. As any European country like full of castles in the Czech Republic, South Lanarkshire has its own defensive buildings. There are the Craignethan castle and the Bothwell castle, which is Scotland's largest and finest 13th century castle.

In South Lanarkshire are also located many museums and historical buildings including Low Parks Museum, John Hastie Museum, Hunter House Museum, Torrance House and Chatelherault Hunting Lodge. There over twenty leisure centers, which vary in size and in the range of facilities they provide. They provide for swimming pools and health suites and others feature sports halls, gyms and fitness studios. To enjoy these services you can book a hotel room in South Lanarkshire, which are added to the historical picture of the town.
